GASTROENTEROLOGY FACTS

  • Approximately 700k people have IBD in the U.S.
  • Approximately 20% of people with IBD have a blood relative with IBD.
  • CD/UC affect men and women equally.
  • Most commonly start to show signs/symptoms between 15-35 years of age.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) involves chronic inflammation of all or parts of the digestive tract. Depending on the location, signs, and symptoms, IBD can be categorized into different diseases. The two most common inflammatory diseases of IBD are Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC)Crohn’s Disease is a chronic inflammation of the lining of your entire digestive tract where as, Ulcerative Colitis causes long-lasting inflammation and sores (ulcers) in the innermost lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum. It is important to note that Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and IBD are very different and not the same. IBS affects the muscle contractions causing, gas, diarrhea, and/or constipation, but is not characterized by intestinal inflammation. Although there is no true cure for Crohn’s Disease nor Ulcerative Colitis, many specialty medications exist that can assist in managing the symptoms associated with these conditions, respectively, allowing you to live a normal, comfortable life.
