HEMOPHILIA FACTS
- Hemophilia A is 4 times more common than Hemophilia B.
- 1 in 5,000 males are born with Hemophilia each year.
Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder that slows the blood clotting process due to low to no levels of a clotting factor. There are many different clotting factors, which are proteins that are needed for normal blood clotting (stops bleeding). Therefore, persons affected by hemophilia bleed for a longer amount of time after an injury. Hemophilia is typically a genetic disorder, meaning it is usually passed from the parents to children. The two major types of Hemophilia are Hemophilia A (Classic) and Hemophilia B (Christmas Disease). Persons with Hemophilia A, have little or no clotting factor VIII. Those with Hemophilia B have little to no clotting factor IX. There is currently no cure for either type of Hemophilia. Hemophilia is treated by replacing the missing clotting factor either prophylactically (before a bleed) or as needed if there is a bleed.
