MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS FACTS

  • More than 2.3 million people worldwide are diagnosed with MS.
  • MS affects women 2-3x more often than men.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a progressive neurological disorder in which the patient’s immune system attacks the protective covering (myelin) of nerves. The removal of myelin disrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body and within the brain itself. The disruption of information leads to symptoms, such as visual disturbances, muscle weakness, coordination and balance issues, numbness, memory problems, etc. MS symptoms vary from person to person, however most patients will experience periods of no symptoms (remission) and periods of disease activity (relapse). The cause of MS is unknown and there are no set symptoms used to diagnose MS. A physician can diagnose MS through a number of strategies including but not limited to medical history, physical exam, MRI, and neurological exam to rule out other possible causes of symptoms and to meet criteria of diagnosis. Once diagnosed the goal of treatment is to prevent the disease from worsening, improve function, and manage symptoms.
