HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a retrovirus that attacks the immune system, gradually causing damage. Once a person’s immune system has been damaged it can can’t fight off infections and diseases leading to a combination of life-threatening infections and cancers, known as AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). HIV is present in breast milk, blood, and genital fluids (semen, vaginal fluids and moisture in the rectum). The only way to know whether you have HIV is through a blood test. Currently there is no cure for HIV, but with proper antiretroviral therapy (ART) HIV can be controlled. ART works by reducing the amount of HIV in the body and restoring the immune system. When taken appropriately ART can prolong the lives of those infected with HIV, along with greatly reducing the chances of spreading the disease.
