TRANSPLANT FACTS

  • Almost every insurance company requires Prior Authorization for Transplant medications.

The most common Transplant cases are kidney and liver, however other organs can be transplanted, such as heart, lung, and pancreas. The key area for medical management of transplant patients is transplant rejection. During a transplant rejection the immune system attacks the transplanted organ leading to failure and the need to immediately remove the organ from the patient. For this reason, prior to any transplant tissue typing is performed to determine donor-recipient compatibility for human leukocyte antigen (HLA) AND ABO blood group. A mismatch of either HLA or ABO blood group would lead to a fast transplant rejection. Medication to suppress the immune system (immunosuppressive therapy) is given to prevent transplant rejection. The immunosuppressant therapy puts transplant recipients at high risk of infections, making it crucial to prevent infection. Immunosuppressive therapy requires careful monitoring to reduce risk of toxicity and rejection.
